He worked as a postgraduate for the Department of Surgery at Kings’ College Hospital in London before enrolling to train as an Osteopath at the British School of Osteopathy in Trafalgar Square 1988.
Following the four-year course he graduated as an Osteopath in 1992. He was invited back to the school as a lecturer in physiology, and as a researcher in the newly set up research department. In addition, he was working in private practice in Herne Hill, South London.
In 1995, Charles moved with his wife to Plymouth in Devon. He continued to work in London, being one of the first Osteopaths in the UK to be employed in the National Health Service at the Marylebone Back Pain Clinic in London’s West End, while also working two days a week in his private practice in Plymouth. He worked at Marylebone until 2002.
In 2000, he founded the Plymouth Community Back Pain Scheme along with two local GPs, one of whom was also an osteopath. This service grew over the years until it had four osteopaths, four GPs, with Special Interest in Back Pain (GPwSI), a psychologist and an exercise programme, all providing evidence-based community care for back pain.
